2011 Top 10 Footballers In
Sports Pundit’s series of reviews of the past 12 months continues with a look at the footballers who stared around the globe in 2011.
Emerged as one of the Premier League’s genuine superstars in 2011, with some irresistable form for Arsenal late in the year. Struggled with injuries for long parts in 2010, but upon his return he fired plenty of goals to finish the 2010-11 campaign with 18 strikes. He’s kept that up in style.
9. Luis Suarez (Liverpool)
The striker’s greatest success for the 2011 calendar year was with his nation Uruguay at the Copa America where he was integral to them lifting the silverware. Also began to dazzle fans at Anfield, but has had his off-field issues.
8. David Villa (FC Barcelona)
One of many Barcelona players on this list, the Spain international forward scored 18 goals as his side won La Liga as well as four strikes in the Uefa Champions League. Villa is a fine finisher and the perfect fit for Barcelona, after his move from Valencia the season prior.
7. Thiago Silva (AC Milan)
A key component in his side’s run to the Italian title and an oft-forgotten hero for that side, given their defensive resilience. Deserves more credit.
6. Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
Rooney had his issues in 2010 but found his feet in 2011, with some scintillating displays for his club on their way to the Uefa Champions League final, which he scored in, and the English Premier League title. He may not score as many goals as he used to, but he’s a creative influence crucial to his side.
5. Andres Iniesta (FC Barcelona)
Iniesta did have his injury problems during the year, but when fit always produced sublime football to the betterment of his side who won the league and European Champions League double. The Spaniard’s wonderful and intricate play is always a pleasure to watch.
4. Gerard Pique (FC Barcelona)
One of the best defenders in the world and another key to Barca’s success. Pique is able to play out from the back which gives his side such drive. His aerial prowess is a big feature too.
3. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
The Portuguese had an unbelievable season individually at Real Madrid, winning the Pichichi award but his side fell short in the title race. Ronaldo did net the winner in extra-time in the Copa del Rey and was truly sensational and unstoppable at times.
2. Xavi (Barcelona)
Another stellar year for the Spanish midfielder who was integral to his side’s successes this term. Xavi is the unsung hero for Barcelona but his quality is obvious when you see him first hand with his passing range and vision second to none.
1. Lionel Messi (Barcelona Jersey)
The Argentine did it all again with Barcelona, helping them lift the Uefa Champions League with a crucial goal in the final against Manchester United. Messi also guided Barca to a stunning La Liga triumph while he scored an incredible number of goals during the calendar year. He added plenty of assists too, topping Spain’s assists table.
