Five Must-See Football Matches This Weekend

There’s no doubting what the big game of the weekend is with El Clasico fast approaching and becoming everyone’s point of discussion as the Spanish giants prepare to do battle.

Real Madrid Jersey v Barcelona Jersey
Spanish La Liga, Saturday 9pm (CET)
Jose Mourinho’s men have been the in-form side in Spain so far this term, but the reigning European and La Liga champions Barcelona retain their aura despite dropping plenty of points already this campaign. In fact, Barca are three points behind Real, but having played a game more so this contest will be huge. Barca famously thrashed Real in La Liga last term, plus they knocked them out in the Champions League semi-finals, although Mourinho’s side did take glory in the Copa del Rey. This season appears a different story, though, with Real looking a cohesive unit. Pep Guardiola’s side seem to be still warming up, but after resting his key players in midweek, you fancy they’ll be up for this occasion. It will reveal alot.

Manchester United v Wolverhampton
English Premier League, Saturday 3pm (CET)
Manchester United have had a horror few weeks with their exit from the Uefa Champions League on Wednesday the biggest blow yet. Wolverhampton head to Old Trafford on Saturday hardly expecting the three points, let alone a result, considering their recent form, but United’s response will be the big talking point. Can Wayne Rooney and co get back to their best form or is their unconvincing recent run going to continue?

Inter Milan v Fiorentina
Italian Serie A, Saturday 9.45pm (CET)
Claudio Ranieri’s Inter will be desperate to get their season rescue back on track on Saturday evening, when they play host to Fiorentina, who are still midtable. Inter had been on the comeback trail after a few wins in a row, before last week’s loss to Udinese. The midweek Champions League defeat to CSKA Moscow has many fearing they won’t ever recover as they sit down in 16th. Three points here will help hugely.

Esperance v Al Sadd
Club World Cup, Sunday 9am (CET)
Football’s Club World Cup is already underway in Japan, with Barcelona and Santos the favourites to joust in the final, however there’s quarter-finals to go just yet with African champions Esperance of Tunisia to take on Asian champions Al Sadd of Qatar on Sunday. There’s also a clash between Japanese champions Kashiwa Reysol - qualified as hosts - and Concacaf champs Monterrey of Mexico to come too.

VfB Stuttgart v Bayern Munich
German Bundesliga, Sunday 6.30pm (CET)
The German giants have had a lean spell in recent weeks but returned to the summit of the Bundesliga after a big win over Werder Bremen. Sunday’s clash at the impressive Stuttgart is a big challenge for Jupp Heynckes’ men who are keen to the complete the first-half of the season on top of the table. Stuttgart are now down in seventh and need the points here.
